Come to Me

Located at Barcelona’s Poblenou Cemetery, this magnificent sculpture, titled Kiss of Death (El Pet de la Mort in Catalan and El Beso de la Muerte in Spanish), depicts death (in the form of a winged skeleton) planting a kiss on a young man’s forehead.

This week as I bury my great aunt and uncle who both were in their 90’s I can only say to DEATH to come to me when…

Come to me
not till I’m grey
glory-rich
and accomplished;

not until I’ve had my fill
of Love, exhausted bliss
curdl’d all my grandchildren,
seen the world and sailed the seas.

Then crown me with eternal sleep
this dearest debt I and all mankind owe
as I lay this fadin’ frame and
all my day’s toil to rest.
