I am of a constitution so general;
it consorts and sympathizes with none
nor does it behold with prejudice.
I reign in all portions of Man’s hour
in all his charms, in all his trivial.
I meet all everywhere at my biding
and enters in at many doors –
by violence and secret influence,
by the aspect of a star and stink of mist,
by the emissions of a cloud,
and meeting of vapor,
by the fall of a chariot,
and stumbling at a stone,
by a full meal or an empty stomach,
by watching at wine,
or watching at prayers,
by spite of words,
or sharpness of a dagger,
by hair or a raisin,
by violent motion or sitting still,
by severity or dissolution,
by God’s mercy or his anger,
by everything in manners,
by everything in nature,
and everything in chance.
I am Death!
