Company of Biafran soldiers leave their positions to advance on a Nigerian position 100 yards away during the Aba offensive, Aug. 1968.

Firm as a rock our noble martyrs stood
unbending as a rod of tempered steel
foreseeing the agony we (now) must feel
they Necessity permitted to ignite War’s wood.

Dying because they wish’d to maintain right
“Strife rule in places and lands of boastful might!”
our martyrs’ name shall ne’er in death wear
round the world, their stirring tales shall bear.

Easterners unborn their names shall learn
and their brave examples will bosoms burn
patriots shall hail them as brothers true
and writ their history for all to view.
