When they tell you
I’m an addict
don’t believe them,
if I could feel this good on
Friday and Saturday
why shouldn’t I on
Tuesday and Wednesday?
My Ex told me, “It takes just once
to grab ahold, but hard to let go.”
My buddies, “It’s a once-in-a-while tang,
all you got to do is blow up your cheeks
to make the vein pop out for the next high.
The feel is a rush– a warm hug from Jesus.”
Now ‘m an expert at needles n’ finding veins.
When they tell you
I’m an addict
don’t believe them
I’m in a relationship that has
turned me into someone
I never thought I would be – dope sick,
a chum to shame, guilt and wreck’d past.
They’ll have to admit it someday
hashtags, billboards can’t make me clean
Stigma can’t make me quit
I ain’t trying to kill myself or OD
cos I still got plenty to offer Humanity,
but most times it feels like someone else
is wearing my body – pray for me.

4 It was the stuff of a satire, were it not painfully true. Nnenne sat silently on a black-spotted Ankara patterned sofa surrounded by chattering friends and coworkers. She and a handful of friends at Lolo’s urging – her childhood friend and workmate, had gathered at her residence to celebrate a hard-fought promotion greeted with […]

3 Mid-age has come; almost lost is the brags and security that goes with the beauty of youth. Will the colors of a peahen be for its survival or pleasantries? 2 What is pleasurable for a man may not always be good for his sanity. It all started innocently about two years ago after Arinze woke up starring at this dark lady whose face held more charm than Genevieve’s. Not recognizing his immediate environment, he shuddered in fright; She is a mirage – I must […]
“If your family member is struggling with addiction, love them. Don’t fight them, don’t judge them. And for the love of everything holy, pray for them.” ― Angela Davis
